Should a Design Manager use their own Design?

Should a Design Manager use their own Design?

Design Managers have the background and talent to do this, but is it good practise?

In this blog we spoke to experienced main contractor design managers to explore this topic further.

It’s a debatable question but from the Design Managers we spoke to the response was a clear “No, No” to using your own Design on a project, this is based on the reasons outlined below:

  • First and foremost, whilst at times it might seem quicker to create your own or amend a Design and pass it onto a subcontractor, the main problem with this is it puts the liability with the Main Contractor should a mistake occur.

  • It distracts you from other issues, a Design Managers job is to manage the process.

  • It may create an issue with external design consultants getting on board with your design, by all means make suggestions and give ideas, but if you are going to get the best out of your design consultants they need to take ownership of the design and be accountable for their work, not putting the blame back on you further down the line.

  • One Design Manager we spoke to went as far to say that they did not feel that main contractors should even be equipped with Autocad and other such software to avoid the temptation of Design Managers doing their own design.

Conclusion

Furthermore, based on the opinions above, whilst it may seem tempting to do your own design and save time initially, in reality it could lead to mistakes further down the line and is also distracting you from what your role really is.
